...there is a place for everything in our group but let us not forget most people are in U3A for the people factor, and to learn or do something new and enjoyable at the same time. This can only be achieved by participation and communication. So let us not fall into the “why don't they” mentality. We ARE they! So if something needs to be done, or you have an idea - SPEAK UP!!

THANK YOU ALL YOU GAMBLERS! If you have ever gambled on the Pokies or the Horses and lost, and you also belong to U3A, then you can claim your Revenge! After filling in the many forms and going through the hoops, we managed to persuade the Gambling Commission to include the U3A in their Grants to purchase new Computers and chairs. So now, if you go to the Computer Room at 150 Edward Street you will see an array of beautiful new Computers with little Gambling Commission Stickers on them, waiting for you to use. It is a joyful sight! Our real appreciation goes to the Commission and the fact that this time all that lovely funding was accessible to US.

Our year has been marked by the very successful launch of our book of members’ reminiscences. I am getting regular reports back of how much readers are enjoying it and indeed it contains a wonderful mix of memories of lives in the past that our children and grandchildren need to be told about. Quite a number of people have asked if we will publish another book. I am sure there are plenty of stories waiting to be told to fill another.

U3A Tawa-Linden - email>

The following paragraph in the Annual Report of U3A Online Incorporated is food for thought and one we need to keep in mind. "The pace of Information Technology (IT) change is so rapid that unless U3As make some effort to move with the times there is a danger of individual groups becoming quaint relics that hold little appeal for new retirees. You only need to look at the old style Senior Citizens clubs for an example of organizations which die if they don't do new things to attract new retirees. I realize that many older people are struggling to get the hang of new technology, but the popularity of beginning computer classes for seniors in all walks of life, not just our own U3As, shows that many older people are prepared to "give it a go." The metaphor the "silver tsunami" has been used to describe the new wave of retirees who are comfortable with computers, the internet, mobile phones, digital cameras, DVDs and other communication technologies, and they will remain dependent on these technologies throughout later life."
